Anomalous Subduction Initiation: Young Under Old Oceanic Lithosphere

نویسندگان

چکیده

When subduction initiates along a transform fault, it is often interpreted that the older and therefore denser oceanic lithosphere should evolve into downgoing plate. However, in western Pacific, several geological cases are probably characterized by young plates underthrusting plates. Using numerical simulations of fault under compression, we propose polarity depends mainly on age offset between two adjacent plates, strength plasticity A small across plate interface favors initiation younger Furthermore, weak faults promote strain localization boundary trigger Plastic deformation prone to localize within thinner weaker location far from transition zone if rate weakening fast enough. have large may still underthrust plays role. Our models explore factors controlling induced polarities potential mechanism explain certain related settings.

On the Yield Strength of Oceanic Lithosphere

The yield strength of oceanic lithosphere determines the mode of mantle convection in a terrestrial planet, and low-temperature plasticity in olivine aggregates is generally believed to govern the plastic rheology of the stiffest part of lithosphere. Because, so far, proposed flow laws for this mechanism exhibit nontrivial discrepancies, we revisit the recent high-pressure deformation data of M...

Effective thermal expansivity of Maxwellian oceanic lithosphere

The thermal expansivity of oceanic lithosphere is a key mineral physics parameter that controls the rate of seafloor subsidence. Because of strongly temperature-dependent mantle rheology, effective expansivity for lithosphere as a whole could be substantially lower than indicated by mineral physics data. Viscoelastic modeling indicates that this reduction in expansivity could be as high as ∼15–...

Archaean Plate Tectonics Revisited 1. Heat Flow, Spreading Rate, and the Age of Subducting Oceanic Lithosphere and Their Effects on the Origin and Evolution of Continents

A simple model which relates the rate of seafloor creation and the age of the oceanic lithosphere at subduction to the rate of continental accretion can successfully explain the apparent differences between Archaean and Phanerozoic terrains in terms of plate tectonics. The model has been derived using the following parameters: (1) the spreading rate at mid-ocean ridges; (2) the age of the ocean...

Convection Beneath Young Oceanic Lithosphere: Implications for Thermal Structure and Gravity

Small-scale convection under the oceanic lithosphere which begins in the first 5 m.y. of cooling can produce a gravity signal with the amplitude and wavelength observed for large areas of the central Pacific and southern Indian oceans using Seasat altimeter data. The trend of the observed anomalies is parallel to the direction of plate motion as might be expected if they were produced by small-...
